4 out of 5 stars Nice piece of kit   September 8, 2010

I spent quite a bit of time researching before choosing the BT-Q1300S. It turned out to be a great choice. The two downsides are the software and battery life. I knew going into it that the software was Windows only, but I have to ding any company releasing consumer hardware without Mac support today. Open Source solutions exist, though, so no worries for my intended usage. I'll also ding the battery life. It's not horrendous, roughly 12 or 13 hours, but I'm sure I'm not the only trekker/photographer that's moving at least that long. I've resorted to trying to remember to shut it off and turn it back on when I get to a location long enough. The problem is that I don't have the best memory and I can easily forget to turn it back on again before moving.

Aside from those two things, this is an outstanding product. I highly recommend it. I would buy one again -- no doubt. Cold start times have been low for me. Accuracy has been high. Urban multi-path issues are unavoidable with a product in this price range, but it has been much better than other products I have used (and own). I'm rather amazed as to how well it will hold a lock, even in a fairly decent "natural" Faraday cage.

I bought it for my wife. She loves it! She brought it for the ski vacation and logged her activities! The software is not the best but I saw you can convert data to other software. Some problems with altitude measurement. The device is in a form of a key fob and the stripe does not look very reliable but to now it works just fine. It has only one button what is pros and cons.

3 out of 5 stars Great software & signal, but no international GPS   March 9, 2010

The sensitivity and 66-channels receiver of this GPS works great in the US. I took the unit to Yosemite and it picked up the signal in 3-30 secs, depending on location. It received GPS data when I was hiking Nevada Falls, biking in Yosemite Valley, and even driving through all the trees in the national park. I was really impressed compared to my old GPS, which took over 1 min. to acquire a signal and had difficulty getting GPS data in a suburban city, but that model was 2 generations ago ;) However, I am really disappointed at its inability to acquire GPS in foreign countries. I took the unit to Thailand, and it cannot get a signal in an open park even in Bangkok metropolis over several days. What a disappointment! - was really looking forward to geotag my photos. Quite surprising too since the company is based in Taiwan. I don't know about Europe - maybe you'll have better luck since GPS is ubiquitous there.

Battery life is ok - it drained in about 6 hours; wished it was longer since I'm sure it will get shorter as it gets older. The GPS unit itself is very small & slim. However, the 1 button design is annoying - it turns on/ off the unit, turns on/ off GPS, turns on/ off bluetooth, and records data points. You need to remember how many secs. to hold the button and how many flashes of light to obtain for each function - it gets confusing! Would 1 more button be asking too much?

The travel software is really cool though. It will automatically geotag your photos and videos as long as you have timestamps on them. It will recreate your route on Google maps so you can relive your journey by showing the pics/ videos as the route progresses. The sports software is useful 'cause you can set goals and keep track of different exercises, and keep different settings for those exercises. Also, the sports software is critical because it enables bluetooth download - you must get versions released on 12-09 or later at QStarz website. To enable bluetooth download, go to the sports GPS settings and you must select the right COM port that your GPS is using (see Control Panel -> Devices -> GPS). The USB drivers for USB download can cause both Windows XP & 7 to crash or freeze. The USB drivers are not written by QStarz, the peeps who wrote the travel/ sports software, but was contracted out to another company. Make sure that when you install the software, you should uncheck the USB drivers to NOT install it (older software will not let you uncheck it, but you can cancel the USB drivers installation when a dialog pops up).

With no GPS signal in Asia, only 1 button functionality, and poor USB drivers, I have to give the GPS unit 3 stars. The software itself deserves 5 stars since it works well and QStarz have been updating it regularly (about every 3 months).

2 out of 5 stars Nice form factor...But I'm not a fan of the software.   February 22, 2010

Small, easy to keep in a pocket, picks up a signal quickly...but the software...I'd be OK with it if I could quickly connect the unit & download the log file without the driver & additional software...but the software install requires a CD key....It's a hardware device. If I don't have it, then I'm probably not going to get much out of the software. So why do I need a CD key, printed on the outside of the envelope, that I'm gonna have to keep track of?

4 out of 5 stars High sensitivity, good packaged software   January 18, 2010
munford (Schaumburg, IL USA)
Very compact, and the build is solid. The sensitivity of this GPS is amazing. It can get GPS lock in my home on the 2nd floor of a 3 floor building. Took it to run/hiking/walk around/driving. Record tracks effortlessly. Very easy to mark waypoint.

The best part is the software package. Very easy to split the track into multiple sections if you did different activities at different times. Easy to add location information to pictures taken on the trip. Just line up the first shot of the trip to the waypoint and the software does the rest of the work.
